...let's be honest here, from one who is no fan of politicians in general, and democrats in particular: he's posturing to get elected.
as the election gets closer, he will play more to the middle, just as every person seeking office has ever done.
That's why his statements from 1996 are so important, no? Yes, he'll try to campaign to the middle. That's why it's so important to remember what he said before he was on the national stage.

in the IL house, a bill came up for a vote, the question was whether to treat babies who had survived abortion attempts (live births), or to deny health care so they would die.
obama voted against the babies.
"To be fair," Obama apparently voted against that bill not because he wanted those babies to die, but because the conventional wisdom was that if you prevented those babies from dying, people might get the idea that we should protect even younger babies from being killed. And we can't have THAT.
(That this passes for an "apologetic" in "moderate" pro-choice circles is just another one of those things that makes you think you're living in a bad movie, not a world that could possibly be real.)
